Scholarly journals

What is a scholarly journal? Check this page for a chart that descibes major differences between scholarly, popular, and trade publications. http://www.lhup.edu/library/studyguides/biology/LandscapeDiff%20between%20Magazines%20and%20Journals.pdf

The LHUP libraries subscribe to a wide variety of databases that provide the full text of articles in thousands of publications. Locate key articles on a topic can be a challenge. The two primary databases for undergraduate research on all topics are:

EBSCOhost: Academic Search Complete

Academic Onefile

In addition, there are many specialized databases that are appropriate for upper level research, such as the collection of American Chemical Society Journals and Wiley Interscience.

Databases for scientific subjects:

Biology

Chemistry

Geology & Physics

Locating the full text of an article:

To determine whether a journal is available in print, microform, or online from the LHU Libraries, check in LHU Journal Finder. All current electronic journals and all current print subscriptions are listed in that database. Some of the older print or microfilm journals may not be in LHU Journal Finder. Check in the library catalog, PILOT, if you don't find them in LHU Journal Finder.

Many older journals are found on microfilm or microfiche. You may request that the article be scanned and emailed to you. Use the ILLiad form and select the Request an Article button. If you can't wait for the item to be scanned, you may view the microform in the library on special machines. Ask at the library reference desk for assistance.

Because of the wide variety of databases available, you should find articles on most topics within the libraries' collections. However, if you need a specific article that is not available, you can request a copy of the article from another library through ILLiad. You will receive an email in your LHU email account with the attached PDF scan of the article.
